2020-2021 School Year.....

I am reading up on the current plans local school districts are having for the upcoming school year. Plans vary- in person, hybrid and remote. All school districts are giving some level of choice. I am so impressed with the thoughtful and careful decision making that districts are implementing in order to accommodate as many people as possible. Will everyone be happy? Nope. Will teachers be giving their best efforts? Absolutely! Will parents? 💯

Last year, as a teacher, I've never worked so hard with remote learning- we all hit the ground running. Educators had no real direction because this was uncharted territory. We learned, took online classes to remain current, and used innovative and unique ways to help reach our students. It meant late night phone calls, mailing treats and letters, drive by parades and driveway visits to remind students and families we were thinking of them and missed them.

Last year, as a parent, remote learning was a huge struggle. I was working full time, trying to help my students, and then trying to help my own girls with their work. Some days were amazing- we all sat at the table and worked together. Other days, we all just needed space. We were snappy and not very patient. There were times I couldn't understand why it was so hard for us when everyone else seemed to be posting about how much fun they were having and how their schedules were working out so well. (Am I the ONLY one who got sick of hearing "What's for lunch?") I also know that many parents still had to go to work, and while I was stressed working from home, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult that was.

In my opinion, I think that the best way for most students to learn is in a face to face social setting. School is not just academic learning. I also know people need and want to go to work, because if they don't, they won't survive. There is no good solution to this. I think we all want things to go back to "normal"- teachers and students go back school, and parents go back to work. Unfortunately, this isn't happening right now. So what do we do? We do what we think is best for our own families' situation and support others, regardless of their opinions and decisions. We need to rally together and support one another. This is a tough time for all of us even if some people don't let on how frustrated or worried they may be. There really are better days ahead, but until then be patient, be kind and be understanding. You never know what someone is going through.
