Why I’m starting this adventure- a reflection

I have always loved working with children. I am what some people call “A kid person.” I just love their sense of humor and outlook on the world. For many years I was a teacher. When I had my children I decided to work part time, and the opportunity to tutor came up. I must say, I LOVED it! I was able to work directly with students in a 1:1 situation and saw results and improvements in a short period of time. I became very close with the students and families I worked with. It was a very satisfying experience.

Once my children were in school full time, I went back to a classroom setting. I’ve been doing that for the past 10 years And it is extremely rewarding. Then, Covid happened. We were all in isolation. It was frustrating, scary and threw quite a curveball. Fortunately, my coteachers were amazing and we all quickly jumped on board to teach online best practices. It was neat to be able to interact with students in a new way, and boy did I take a lot of online google classes to get there!

With all the uncertainty of the new school year, I‘ve been doing some reflecting. I’ve listened to the news, to my teacher colleagues, my own children and other parents. I decided that I wanted to create a hybrid program that helps moms, dads, students and teachers. Our teachers have done an amazing job with online learning, and I think that as a parent having someone to help me navigate and set up a schedule for my kids is very helpful. So, thats what I’m doing. Weekly, I’ll have online workshops for parents on topics they need assistance with. And while I‘ll work 1:1 with students in person, I‘m also providing “zoom help” 2 days a week where kids can come on and ask questions.

This is a strange time, but I’m hoping that by making some proactive changes, I can better service students and their families. And even when we do go back in the fall, some of us are going to need some refresher lessons to help adjust to being back.

So stay safe everyone, and if you find yourself struggling, reach out! Bring on the new adventure! We’ve GOT this! 😊💪
